Spain ranks in Europe’s top five lifestyle destinations – here’s how Madrid, Barcelona, the Balearics and Marbella compare

No country scores more top-five finishes than Spain in this year’s lifestyle rankings

Knight Frank’s European Lifestyle Report 2025 compares Europe’s prime locations for relocation, lifestyle, and property investment. Spain features prominently, confirming its position as one of the continent’s most desirable places for globally mobile wealth.

Madrid and Barcelona among top cities

In the ranking of European cities, Lisbon came first, followed closely by London. Madrid secured third place with an average lifestyle appeal score of 6.76, ahead of Dublin, while Barcelona took fifth place with 6.13. Both cities are singled out as enjoying renewed demand in the post-pandemic “urban revival”, thanks to culture, convenience, and strong international links.

Balearics and Marbella stand out among non-city markets

The Balearic Islands placed fifth in the preferred non-city destinations, behind Chamonix, Verbier, Tuscany, and the Algarve. That puts Mallorca and Ibiza firmly on the radar of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) seeking a year-round lifestyle. Marbella is also highlighted as one of the Mediterranean’s most attractive hubs, benefiting from strong international schools, infrastructure, and a thriving expat scene.

Spain in the European top five overall

When it comes to the “big picture” of relocation, Spain sits in the top five European destinations for wealthy individuals alongside Monaco, Switzerland, Italy, and Portugal. The report points to Spain’s lifestyle appeal, connectivity, and established expat communities in Madrid, Barcelona, and the coastal resorts. Tax considerations also play a role: certain regions, including Madrid, Andalucía, and the Balearics, offer a 100% wealth tax exemption – a significant draw for the globally mobile.

Prime property market resilience

Knight Frank data show Madrid leading Spanish prime price growth in the 12 months to Q2 2025 with a 6.4% increase, while Marbella rose 5.7% and Barcelona 2%. Forecasts suggest steady further gains in 2026. With purchase costs for residents running at around 7–15% and prime prices ranging from €8,400 per sqm in Barcelona to over €14,000 in Madrid, Spain offers competitive entry points compared to Alpine or Riviera peers.

Takeaway

The report makes clear that Spain is not only competing but excelling in Europe’s lifestyle league table. With cities like Madrid and Barcelona regaining momentum, island destinations still high on the wish-list, and regional tax advantages bolstering appeal, Spain looks set to remain one of the continent’s winners in the global wealth migration game.
