A work colleague of mine bought a property in Villamartin a couple of years ago. He continues to sing it’s praises. As I’m currently considering where to buy I’m thinking of going out to have a look. I would welcome your thoughts on the area and it’s developments.
Villamartin is a quite heavily built-up area with a mixture of established quality villas, townhouses and apartments alongside newer lower budget developments, predominantly aparments. As in most places along this coastline, there is extensive building work ongoing, and the place is starting to feel ‘crowded’.
As you probably know, there is a championship golf course at the hub. I’ve never played there but the course, clubhouse and outbuildings, although attractive enough, do look a little tired now.
Las Ramblas and Real Campoamor golf clubs are a 10 minute drive so there is a good choice if you are a golfer.
There is a well-established commercial centre near the golf course, with a good mix of restaurants (Eduardo’s was good value 2 years ago when I last visited), bars, fast-food outlets and shops. There are tall palm trees in the centre and parrots flying around (!), and the place has a good atmosphere during the evenings ‘in season’, live music etc.
The area is well served by other commercial areas, a very wide selection of supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, dentists, medical centre etc. There is an international school in the area and a large bowls club.
There is a thriving ex-pat ‘scene’ with plenty of clubs etc if that is your thing! With quite a high proportion of residents, there appears to be lots going on socially throughout the year.
Beaches are about 7km away, sandy inlets mostly, surrounded by rocky landscape, varying in size. Campoamor and Cala Capitan are particularly nice IMO. There is a very pleasant walk along the coast stretching from Cabo Roig to Punta Prima, and in part it is spectacular.
There are a couple of marinas if you enjoy yachting/boating.
To the north just outside Villamartin, towards San Miguel de Salinas, it starts getting much greener, less dense with orange and lemon groves etc and is a stark contrast.
Generally VM is pleasant to visit, though it is devoid of any real Spanish-ness. Mostly British owners and residents.
There are a very wide-ranging choice of properties and out-looks. Some golf and some open country views.
Prices have been hit for the past year and are coming down steadily.
New build available in certain areas. Resales are plentiful.
There is a desperately high crime rate, mostly break-ins. I have half a dozen friends who, without exception, have all suffered more than 1 in the past year. One friend who has lived there for four years has had at least 8, despite having fitted Rejas and even an alarm system.
I have never sold a property there as crime was always a severe problem 8 years back when I began in the business.
I don´t see much point in offering anything there for sale if I am aware of the problem of crime.
I´m sure there will be many who have never suffered such fates, they will think quite differently to me and reccommend it. It´s just that I could not live there because of the possibility of frequent crime and would register my concerns to anyone asking.
