Local Area and Places of Interest
Mojacar
It is an ancient Moorish fortress town that stands on a huge rock overlooking the pristine beaches and sparkling waters of the Mediterranean.
Apparently, Walt Disney was born here. Back in the 1960s Mojacar was like a ghost town. Most of the area’s inhabitants had moved to the Barcelona region and further afield to find work in the factories. In an effort to attract new residents, the town’s major gave land away to anyone who promised to build on it. Within a year the town became a thriving art colony.
Later, the tourists followed. Visitors from all over Europe and beyond flocked to Mojacar, drawn by its stunning natural beauty, excellent beaches and rugged charm. The years that followed saw the development of Mojacar’s shoreline, with many hotels and villas being built. Nowadays most of its foreign residents come from Europe.
Although, Mojacar has now become the largest tourist resort on the Costa Almeria, thankfully it still retains most of its original character including the Moorish fortress called El Torreaon or the Arch of Luciana; both fantastic structures, which will literally transport you back in time. There is a maze of narrow, whitewashed streets that all seem to lead you to an amazing view out over the sparkling Mediterranean below.
There is two parts to Mojacar; the old town (Mojacar Pueblo) and Mojacar Playa (the modern seafront resort). While Mojacar Pueblo offers a wealth of history, culture and architecture, Mojacar Playa has some of Andalucia’s most spectacular beaches, like Playa de los Genoveses and the Playa de Monsul.
Golf
There are 5 golf courses within 20-30 minute drive – Cortijo Grande, Valle del Este, Marina del la Torres, the famous Desert Springs and the brand new Macenas. There is also a driving range at Vera.
Skiing
Sierra Nevada is Europe’s most southern ski resort. The resort is located 32 km from the centre of Granada and is only a 2 hour drive. In 1996, it hosted the World Alpine Ski Championships.
The ski season normally lasts from the beginning of December until the end of April or beginning of May. Artificial snow machines now mean that the resort can open for skiing even when there is no natural snow. Andalusia has a very high proportion of sunny days even in the winter and usually it is possible to ski with beautiful blue skies and warm temperatures. It is possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe at the beach in the afternoon on the same day.
The highest summit of the Sierra Nevada range is Mulhacén at 3,481 metres, the highest ski lift and piste goes to just below Veleta which is at 3,398 metres.

Cabo de Gata
Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park is a natural park in Andalusia, near the city of Almeria. It is the largest terrestrial-maritime reserve in the European Western Mediterranean Sea, covering 460 km2 including the town of Carboneras, the mountain range of Sierra de Cabo de Gata, and 120 km2 of the sea as part of a Marine reserve. It is of volcanic origin and is centred around the Cabo de Gata headland. Its climate is semiarid to the extent of being the driest location in Europe. In 1997 it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In 2001 it was included among the specially protected areas of the Mediterranean.
Travel
Only two and a half hours flight from Northern Europe and a straight, quiet, 50 minutes drive from the Almeria International Airport. Alicante and Murcia airports are also an economic option and an easy drive.
AND IF THAT ISN’T ENOUGH – FINALLY
This area has a true desert climate, sunny, warm and dry in winter, in summer hot inland but cooler on the coast. It is a fact that this area enjoys the warmest, sunniest and driest winter of the whole of the coast of Spain and Europe. Sun drenched family holidays in Spain and long golf weekends are available at all times of the year, including suntans from September to May!
