Spain’s ruling party The PP is shifting to the extreme right and purging state media of descent. This is a worrying development as the country seeks an EU bailout of their own terms and to manage the release of ‘news’ to suit their own perspective.

Be careful Mark our forums which is riddled with descenting posters, such as myself may be next. 😯

This isn’t anything new. Telemadrid is just a PP propaganda machine. RTVE was biased towards the PSOE when they were in power. Spanish people are absolutely gobsmacked when I show them this:

Heh! I think even Paxman would struggle getting a straight answer from Sr Rajoy.

@Chopera : Do they know that Paxman’s brother is the UK Embassador to Spain ??? In Spain politcians & other known personalities do not care as to what they say or dont say. They dont care about their reputation or how it can affected. Most Spaniards will not watch a seious program or lack the attention span required to absorb such programes if they watch them.

I remember in the 90’s there was a program called ” la Mechina de Verdad ” The late Mayor of Marbella Jesus Gill was on this program. Three questions were asked of him & he was found lying on all three of them. ( He was not taken by surpise as he was informed before hand as to why he was appearing )

In any other Country such person would have considered to have shot himself in the foot. Jesus Gill went to become the Mayor of Marbella and rest is history. Comapre this to Gerald Ratner who in jest said his jewellery was crap. It destoyed him and Ratners.

Maybe because they are all friends, family and hangers on who have benefitted from his patronage. The rest are just village idiots.

For those of you who think the Falangists have gone away and Spain is now a model of European Social Democracy think again.

As the crisis weakens further the countries ability to recover, freedoms previously taken for granted will disappear.

Manipulating the free speech of press and media is but a beginning. Spain has an ineffective opposition party and the PP have basically a once in a lifetime opportunity to trample all over liberty and establish itself as indispensable and the saviour of a modern democratic Spain.

There is a real risk they will weaken hard won liberties and turn back the clock. All in the name of fiscal austerity.

There is a precedent read the history to the run up of of the Civil War. Franco came to power off the back of an economic slump and what he regarded as collective moral decay and which we call liberty and freedom.

Just as Aznar was given the boot because he tried to manipulate the media, this too will fail. PP cannot control the Internet – the blogs, Facebook, they cannot control Twitter.

Most of us get our ‘news’ on-line. What PP is doing is foolish. But who here expected anything different from them?

‘Democracy’s a very fragile thing. You have to take care of democracy. As soon as you stop being responsible for it and allow it to turn into scare tactics, it’s no longer democracy. It’s something else. It may be an inch away from totalitarianism.’
      Sam Shepard.
