Some months ago I noticed an additional charge on my bill called Bono Europa USA..9.95 euros plus IVA. (monthly) I had not requested this service and did not need it. It has taken 3 months and several phone calls to cancel this 👿 I am still awaiting a refund.
This was discussed on another forum and it seems to have been happening to many others, some as far away as Valencia province! To date I only know of Foreigners being charged. All the Spanish people I know have not had this “forced” on them. I am thinking of complaining to the consumer dept. as I think it must be a deliberate policy to add a service to foreigners. Has anyone else on here been charged?

Katy I do not know about this charge, but I can only advise anyone who has an account with Telefonica to check the bill each time it comes in,not once ,not twice but at least three times with a powerfull magnifying glass. The company is notorious for introducihg charges or charging for services not requested. The latest is the payment of 80cents a month +IVA(VAT)for identifying the caller on a telephone. This service was introduced as a free service in 2001, now Telefonica is charging. IT IS THE RESPONSABILITY OF THE CUSTOMER TO ADVISE TELEFONICA IF THEY DO NOT REQUIRE THE SERVICE OTHERWISE IT WILL BE CHARGED ON THE BILL.
It is the same with their special offers for internet and mobile phones with Movistar, a magnifying glass for the smallprint is a must.
Unfortunately the privatisation of the telecommunications industry in Spain was/is a joke, consumer protection associations have less teeth than a chicken and although Telefonica has lost cases in the European courts, they just appeal and the cases drag on for years.
I am not sure which company is worse Microsoft or Telefonica it is too close to call. They both just laugh at the public.
A relative of mine who only spends summer here has been suffering from major telefonica problems, they just wanted a telephone line and there bills show ADSL, dispite calls in Spanish and English they haven’t acted so I stopped telefonica from taking money from the bank account, 9 days on still not heard anything, but I bet it won’t be long……
A couple of weeks ago while I was out, OH took a phone call from Telefonica Sales. They asked him which other country he phoned. Instead of putting the phone down (as I would have done) he told them the UK and they offered him a Special Tarif for 9.95€ giving us 3 hours of free phone calls to the UK.
When I got home he told me about it and he wasn’t really sure whether he had accepted the deal or not – something about the person’s English not being easily understood.
I tried the Telefonica website and couldn’t find the tarifs. We didn’t know whether we had signed for it, whether it was a monthly or two monthly charge etc. etc.
We phoned Telefonica on the 1004 number and eventually spoke to an English speaker and told them we didn’t want this special tarif. After a few minutes they realised what we were talking about and said the deal would be removed. We hadn’t made any phone calls to the UK as we usually use Skype.
I haven’t seen the paper bill this month, but the total amount is about the same as it usually is.

Check your bill carefully for the next year at least, as they can slip it in anytime. What was the date on your latest bill ? Could be they signed you up too late to be included in the latest one.
They are also now suddenly chargin for reconection if you get cut off either the landline or the mobile phone bill! 30 euros I think for mobile and 20 plus iva for the landline
Hopefully I will be transferred this week to Vodafone who use the same number and for 15 euros per month plus iva, free landline calls to Spain and their fone is actually a mobile one!
They also have a 6mb adsl just out which I am looking into as I am fed up at being held to ransom by Telefonica. As soon as its all up and running I will be shouting all from the rooftops and hope many people move as well.
Its great to have local kiosks open most hours where you can speak to a human, either in english or spanish as opposed to calling those other idiots!
Right, rant almost over – now who has nicked all the sand off our beach???
