Getting a job in Spain or the islands -its not the easiest time to generate an income in this country. Recent troubles present an opportunity not without risk to earn dividends to pay bills. However whilst Santander BVVA Iberdrola Endesa and Telefonica have all fallen and are paying dividends only partly dependent on Spanish earnings one may need to take a very long term view about any capital invested as in the short term they may decline further. In fact generating Euro might be more safely achieved by collecting dividends from non Spanish companies like Royal Dutch Shell. But the IBEX currently looks cheap if one can take a long term view.

Yes the banks have retraced and Santander bounced backed in advance of the dividend -how long with the last results will it be maintained at the current generous level? Until we hear the worst I suspect the banks stock will retrace exdiv. Iberdrola produced interesting half year results with a 44% drop in returns in Spain but counterbalanced by global returns not least from its sterling returns from Scottish Power in UK.
