Daughter and family have just booked a holiday with Virgin Atlantic to Barbados in August. Approx £1000 pp. for all-inclusive, free waters sports. Kids clubs for all different ages 10am-9pm. Lots of other activites and entertainment. Free shuttle to capital and I know the stretch of beach far superior to the beach near Banus.
Just curious but compared a 4* in Marbella. Melia hotel close to Puerto Banus. Looks a nice enough place but nothing comparable for families as above. Price for August about the same just for half-board.
It is not strange that British tourism is well down for Spain. Families would spend considerably more buying lunches/drinks etc in Spain. The one in Barbados they don’t need to spend anything and the kids are entertained! and this is just one example!

I know which one I would go for – Barbados any day, even if it was more expensive (which it isn’t). I would expect the customer service in Barbados to be better, a major benefit for parents hoping to get some R&R.
In Spain, prices went up and service went down during the boom, which partly explains why Spain’s tourism is down, as it is now so easy to compare prices and read reviews. Spain is going to have to pull its finger out.

You think? I don’t know about Barbados but I have been all over Europe and I don’t get the service I get in Spain anywhere, maybe perhaps London.
Anyway, I would probably go to Barbados as well! -

NOT SURE ON THE WEATHER IN AUGUST, BECAUSE I ONLY GO IN DEC/JAN, AND NOT SURE WHAT HOTEL YOUR STAYING IN , SO I’LL ASSUME WEST COAST. GO TO OISTON BAY IN THE EVENING. IT USED TO BE ON A FRIDAY EVENING, BUT I THINK YOU CAN GO ON MORE THAN I EVENING NOW.
ITS A PARTY NIGHT WITH THE LOCALS DANCING TO LOCAL MUSIC AND HAVING A GREAT TIME.
OH AND THE MAIN REASON TO GO IS THE B-B-Q FOOD SOLD IN THE MANY STALLS THERE. FOR ME THE BEST MEAL I HAVE HAD, MARLIN WITH SALAD AND THE LOCAL SAUCE TO DIE FOR. AND VERY CHEAP. LAST TIME I WAS THERE 5 DOLLARS BAJAN 21/2 U.S.
A GREAT EVENING. -

Hi Alan, nice to see you posting again. 😀
How’s the information-gathering going?

I saw in the weekend’s Press that tourist numbers to Spain are down by a huge 19% this year, just to add to their woes. 🙄

Is July/August not hurricane season in Barbados? Been to Barbados before, beaches were lovely but I thought the landscape flat and boring. The suba diving was excellent – if I had a choice I would like to go to neighbouring Antigua. I found Barbados to be very expensive for eating out but that was about 10 years ago.

The southern caribbean tends to escape most of the hurricanes although not exempt. I agree that Barbados is not one of the most scenic islands (lovely beaches though). St Lucia and Grenada are spectacular inland. Never been to any in summer but faced with a choice of Banus and Barbados I know which one I would choose when prices are similar, the Barbados one also has coffee makers in rooms…something Spain never seems to recognise as a marketing tool 🙄
