UK has a car scrappage scheme whereby you can get £2000 off a new car if you scrap one over 10 years old (plus some other conditions). spain seems to have a similar scheme, Plan 2000E – I think this is a European initiative. Does anyone know whether I can scrap a car in UK then get the rebate when buying new in Spain? I seem to be dancing my way around the benefits otherwise!

The answer is no. The scheme only applies to cars bought in the UK. You could always buy a left-hand drive one.

There is also a recent push to get the car market up and running again and the Spanish government are offering a grant towards buying a new car or motorbike, which in some areas is added to by the local government as well. The manufacturers are also meant to give something towards this…however, we had heard that all that was happening was that the prices of new cars were now going up by this amount…. 😀

Hi Heather,

I remember reading about this a few weeks ago in La Nueve Espana, and it said that for Asturias, 50% of the subsidy comes from the Central / Local Government and the other 50% from the dealer.

Not sure if its the same for all Autonomia because the article said that it was much better (cheaper) to pop next door to Galicia if you wanted a new car.

The Spanish scrappage scheme, Plan 2000E, was recently extended as it has been successful in preventing a slide in new car sales (2009 sales were the lowest for 15 years but would have been catastrophic but for 260.000 sales under the scheme). The scheme details have also been amended to make it easier to claim. In most communities you can claim 2000€ but in La Rioja and Madrid only 1500€ as the local governments are not participating.
