Oh dear, Obama’s aides have screwed up big time re. the planning of this trip.

His visit is for the 4th-8th August but the Biggest Summer Music Event concert is not until 20th. Bet Obama is spitting feathers he’s going to miss it.

Maybe he’ll be consoled by the fact that Susan Boyle isn’t appearing.

Do you think he’s looking for a bargain in Calahonda? I hope he reads this message board for some tips to invest his 25k 🙂

Latest news is that he isn’t coming, just his wife and one of his daughters. Still good for the town though. Hotel is actually in Benahavis so many complaining that marbella is claiming the prestige. They didn’t complain when developments listed in benahavis were sold as marbella

He screwed everything up here in the US , now he is also trying to screw up everything in Spain.

2012 is so far away for new elections.

Spain, cannot be screwed any one. Further progress in this direction be only acheived by Spanish creativity.

Can’t help feeling that Mrs Obama’s visit might provoke a touch of envy from many hard done by Americans when it was announced she arrived in Malaga with her 40 strong entourage of family, friends and worker bees.

I’d love to take you all to Mustique but you’ll have to wait for the Euro Lottery to come up for me 😀

Yes there have been thousands of critical comments from Americans. It is very strange to use taxpayers money for a flying visit to friends for just 4 days 😕 Perhaps she is doing a favour for someone 😐 Certainly won’t have done the hotel any harm!

Think you are right katy, it’s probably a favour in return for what I wonder?

Margate and not Mustique for you I’m afraid, is that ok? 😉

Perhaps, Mrs Obama is learning some Spanish legal practises to be introduced in USA. After all they gave us Ambulance chasing lawyers. SO its pay back time.

I get the impression that the Obamas have already lost a lot of their glitter in the eyes of the US public as most Politicians seem to once they’ve got into power and knowing they have 4-5 years grace. I’m not sure how long the Con/Dem coalition will last because the Lib Dem’s ratings have halved.

All politcal parties have at least one Albatross round their necks and the LibDem’s one is surely Simon Hughes.
In 2008, being the then president of the Liberal Democrats, he addressed 60,000 Muslims at a conference in Docklands, London. The youtube clips (of which there were many posted of the same conference) have all been mysteriously removed I see 😯 but the Daily Telegraph thankfully (“lest we forget”) has kept it available on their website .

A snippet of this grovelling vote-seeking prat’s speech:

“I want to tell you that in the years ahead in this country there will be elections for the European Parliament and for the British Parliament and Councils. I ask every sister and brother to take part in those elections because we want you to fully participate. This is your place, every country in the world is your country. You are part of this country and we want you to participate fully in this country.

But not just as voters. We want you to be our leaders, we want you like my friend Faiz who is here, and my friend Ajmal and my other Muslim friends to be standing for council, for standing for Parliament, for standing for the European Parliament. To be cabinet ministers, to be the Prime Minister. I want the sisters and the brothers, particularly the sisters, to come forward and say “I will lead in the political sphere” because we need you. We need you to lead our politics and we want you to come forward to be part of that political leadership in this country”.

As Damian Thompson of the DT says “for a masterclass in political opportunism you really can’t beat it”. Mr. Hughes certainly does not speak for me.

For anyone interested (and with a strong stomach), get your sick bag ready:
      http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/damianthompson/100037500/thanks-be-to-allah-a-sick-making-display-of-lib-dem-opportunism-from-simon-hughes/

I know, way off topic. 😆

The Spanish trip and the Obama’s generally get a slaughtering on Fox News:

Fox News, that bastion of objective, unbiased reporting. You know it must be true if they report it.

Love it or hate it, it’s a fact that Murdoch’s channel following on from the war in Iraq in 2003 was the most watched news channel in the US. It was also the preferred network of the American forces. For the Obama address on Afghanistan Fox News was watched by 4.5 million viewers compared to CNN (its nearest competitor) at 2.3 million.

Even if one thinks Fox News spouts rubbish, a lot of Americans watch it. And many many Americans will soak up every word, whether truly spoken or not. My point being re. the link I posted which critcised the Obama’s and the Spanish trip, it was a very damaging and widely-watched piece.

Yeah, 1.5% of the US population are just falling over themselves to watch Fox.

Charlie was just giving an example, matters not that it was Fox as all the US media are saying more or less the same. USA hasn’t been friendly towards Spain since Zapatero was elected. Firstly he childishly refused to stand for the American anthem and then he withdrew spains troops without notification

Being naturally a suspicious person (supposed you’ll have noticed 😉 ) I still think there is something fishy about the visit. Even with a private plane and all expenses paid it is not an easy journey to be taken lightly with a young Daughter…for 4 days As the spanish say Aquí hay gato encerrado !

If it’s true she came to visit a friend , why now after about 20 years. I think someone, somewhere called in a favour.

      Exactly Katy.

The New York Times commented on/acknowledged the same fact:
“Critics back home question the wisdom of such a lavish vacation, which involves at least some taxpayer money, in a time of austerity. The blogosphere has been filled with commentary about what many saw as a tone-deaf trip in the same week the United States reported the loss of 131,000 more jobs. “A modern-day Marie Antoinette,” scolded a New York Daily News columnist”.

You can make 4.5 million into a percentage if it makes you happy 🙂 – but that’s still twice as many viewers as those who “fell over themselves” to watch that particular speech on CNN.
      And your point is?

Charlie, you can dress it up all you want but Fox is very much a minority news channel catering to and espousing a particular political veiwpoint. IMO until it at least attempts to be more balanced in its coverage it will remain so.

The only source I can find for your quoted figure after the Obama address is a Fox news press release. That is not to say it isn’t true, but it is a very selective quote.

I do know that BBC World regards its only serious rival as CNN and vice versa. The last global viewing figures were:

      CNN – 295 Million
      BBC – 233 Million
      Fox – 20 Million.

Yes it is a different story in the US market domestic where Fox do run CNN closer, even there they run a clear second. They cannot however be said to be a true reflection of American opinion, only a part of it.

I have relatives living in the USA and the fact is every media outlet is saying the same even if only 1% watches Fox news. A quick google confirms this.

Is it just me or am I temporarily in the FFF (funny farm forum). 😆

Brian, sweetness and light – I’m not “dressing anything up”. And I certainly never said Fox News is “a true reflection of American opinion”.
Where is all this stuff coming from? I’m almost finding this obvious pathalogical disdain for Fox News quite fascinating.

My post with the accompanying link simply stated how Michelle O’s Spanish trip – and the Obamas generally – got a pasting on a Fox News item.
And guess what. Michelle O’s Spanish trip – and the Obamas generally – got a pasting on the Fox News item.

Take me out and shoot me, quote viewing statistics for other channels, get the calculator out like Peter and furiously calculate what percentage of the American population watched Obama’s address on Afghanistan…..whatever rings your bicycle-bell. But my link with the accompanying statement, like Ronseal, does exactly what it says on the tin.

Katy – I was going to post another US media link critcising Michelle O’s trip to Spain but think I’ll just go for a swim.

I thought it was an excellent link and very intersting, so get out of the pool Charlie and paste the other link.

Fox is an unbelievably rabid news channel, I couldn’t believe some of the things they said during the US election but it is interesting and relevant to see how the visit was viewed back there, and I kind of agree with Katy, something fishy about her coming all this way for 4 days.

But you know what… we just loved it here in Marbella, it was a big boost for us, and we haven’t had many these past few years.

Absolutely! Everyone in the world will have heard the name Marbella by now. Probably generate more bookings than the aftermath of the Ryder cup. I sometimes go on a cruise forum (planning where I am going next). Mainly Americans who post and this last week a few have been asking “how can I get to Marbella from Málaga port?” (I posted very positively about the place 🙂 ). Have also answered questions about marbella golf courses.

Businesses please make all cheques out to usual Cayman Isles bank 😉

Quite a few Americans already visit the Marriot place in Elviria. We bought our florida house from an American guy I met in the breadshop queue at Supercor. He asked me what chapata bread was like, turned out he was a Naples estate agent…..funny old world!

I am sure I will get shot down for having rose tinted specs and all that but I do love Marbella and Mrs O’s visit is a great boost for the area.
Lets face it, how many mediterranean resorts would she actually go and stay in for 3 or 4 days? A few on the French Riviera, The Amalfi coast, a few others but not many and certainly not many in Spain. If her long term friend lived in say * would she go and stay there or would she stay in a nearby city like Alicante or Barcelona and have her friend come to her? I have not put in a town name as I would not wish to insult anybody from that town but I think you could replace my * with an awful lot of Spanish resorts.

Have to agree with you there. When we got a bit disillusioned with marbella we looked around many areas with a view to moving….Marbella was still tops (In Spain) and despite everything it still has a good profile. Was good for us 😀
