I don’t live in spain permanently, approximately 3 months during the year. I am wondering is it worthwhile getting a phone line installed. I would like to know if phone charges are expensive in spain. Is there a lot of red tape to getting the phone installed. Would like to hear.
We were quite surprised that it was relatively simple to get a landline. We completed a form online on Telefonicas website and have a contract that means we pay no line rental, just for the calls (with line rental you seem to get free calls but we get this through our broadband access..and seem to get free local calls anyway). Ideal if you are only here 3 months of the year!
The only difficult thing if you are abroad is that it took them a couple of weeks to get back to us and then the man from Telefonica had to arrange to come round and test the line worked and give us our phone number!
You can buy cards that allow you to make 160 mins of calls to the UK for 5euros, we use supercall, or if you have broadband you could try Skype but we have real trouble phoning landlines in the UK using it as no one can hear us!! Or just use a mobile – I guess it depends where you are phoning and who phones you as only your best friends will ring you on a Spanish mobile from the UK!!
Thanks for info. I have someone keeping an eye to place while we are not there so they could let the phone man in. I will check out telefonica. It can work out expensive when Hubby is in ireland and I’m there with kids – he is ringing my mobile from our landline in ireland. If he rings from his mobile to my mobile I get charged as well as him. Also if my mum wants to ring it makes it cheaper to have the landline.
