Funnily enough it’s the one place where we weren’t impressed by our meal, in our tour of the Basque country and Navarra earlier this year. I suspect we must have chosen badly since we only had one meal there.
Some fantastic walks and views around though. Only drawback with the place is the weather – expect the atlantic to bring clouds and rain.
San Sebastian has just been voted No.1 food destination in the World
A sentiment that I’ve been evangelising to my friends about for years ……… not only food but a place with some really picturesque areas.
If you can extend to the cost of Michelin stars then the are some cracking places … favourite is Akelarre, and on top of the food, the views over the ocean are stunning.
Being not a food snob …. there are excellent propositions for all tastes and budgets.

Maybe it’s because I don’t use Michelin star restaurants, but I’ve found somewhere like Valladolid serves up the best meals and tapas. In both cases they are blessed with great wine producing regions.
The main drawback to settling in the Basque country (apart from the high house prices) is the climate – often wetter than the UK. Pamplona inland (yes it’s Navarra but often claimed as part of the Basque lands) however is somewhere that impressed me greatly. Because of the proximity to mountains they do have cold winters, but glorious summers too. And the build quality I saw was very good, far better than Brits imagine based on the Costa developments.
Hm Jaime, I’ve started unpacking my cases already, thought that was going to be the new property hot spot, I was going to reserve 20 this time, it will have to wait now 😆
Have been to Santander which I quite liked although a port and a bit industrial looking but ok once inside the City, and along Spain’s Northern Coast and round to la Coruna, it really is so different to those Costas, much greener, prettier some might say but Atlantic weather comes in, a bit like Cornwall for weather. Another country almost 🙄

I am heterosexual and so I don’t think San Sebastian will be quite to my taste!
2 things I would point out. Heterosexuals like good food aswell.
And your the one that has used the excuse of not having children or a wife because you cannot buy a property. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.
