I am planning to buy a house in northern Costa Blanca later this year, I have a NIE and will need a bank account for transferring money from UK.

Reports say that many banks in Spain have high service charges.

Has anyone out there got good experiences of a bank where the charges are low and the service good?

” a bank where the charges are low and the service good “

      Contradiction in any country.

      Hi Gary,
Have you tried looking at advice on http://www.practicalspain.com .It is a bit dated however we have used a bank , La Caixa recommended by Maurice Hamlin, creator of practical spain website and we have had no problems and excellent service over the last 2 years.. No charges for transferring money in 3 stages from UK using HIFX although when purchasing we had a hicup as they charged us quite a lot for each cheque at different stages until Maurice personally sorted it out for us. We ended up paying a usual charge for each bankers draft of 30 euros. This arrangement bank is at a particular branch of La Caixa in Gandia. More info through web page above. We wholeheartily recommend them as they have also sorted out our direct debits and tax with minimum fuss and the staff Rosanna and Leandro are the friendliest people you are ever likely to meet.

For transfering money over I would always use a good FX Company. Most of them will do the transfer for free and give better rates than the banks.

For a bank account I think there charges all much the same (too high) and service comes down to the actual personnel in any given branch. Personally I’m with the Halifax who are brilliant and have an excellent on- line banking facility.

My advice would be to visit a couple of banks and see which one greets you and deals with you in a proffessional way.
