The Spanish tax authority is targeting British expats it suspects of inadvertently or even deliberately avoiding tax.

According to expat tax expert Peter Howarth, the Spanish authorities are targeting Britons in Spain as they crack down on alleged tax avoidance. Their actions are part of an overall package of austerity measures, designed to grab as much taxation revenue as possible in a bid to shore up the flagging economy.

As a resident in Spain your worldwide assets are subject to Spanish taxation – however, it is alleged that some expats have undeclared assets offshore. It is such individuals who are apparently being targeted by the Hacienda in Spain as they seek out those who have been illegally avoiding taxation.
