Just to warn you all that the forum will be down for maintenance for about half an hour this evening at around 10pm. I know, I know, how are you going to live without it, even for half an hour?
Sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully it will be worth it.
Well, if I’m not much mistaken it should go back to looking a lot like it did before. I’m just having the software version updated, and few minor design changes, so I don’t expect it to stay like this for long.
Well, let’s just wait and see what tomorrow brings. I expect the colour scheme to return to what it was, but the new layout might be here to stay (to be honest, I don’t know what to expect, I just ordered a software upgrade but didnt’ think it would cause big changes to the layout).
Change is often annoying at first, but you often end up glad it happened once you get used to it, so let’s reserve judgement for now.
Anyway, off to bed, because whatever happens, it won’t be the end of the world.
Within this update version of SPI you can see the member list, don’t remember this previously, makes intresting reading ie the old business 80/20 rule. But in this case its probably 90% of posts come from 10% of members.

Now the format has settled down from last night, I like it. My only comment is I think a black typeface on the Board Index and Forum Indexes would be clearer/easier on the eye. It’s all just a bit too much blue IMO.
I still don’t like this new format 🙁 On “Users browsing forum” it says “No registered users. 4 guests” Well ,I’m a registered user. The subject matter is too dominating on each post. The format is different but not an improvement, IMHO.
Did you log in Clare when you looked, if you click on the Who’s Online it shows you who is and what the are doing i.e. replying to a post.

I think there is a bit of work to be done yet with regard to the look and feel this is the standard version of the software by the looks of it, evident by the fact that the headline logo still says phpBB which is the name of the software. there are many templates which I’m sure Mark is aware that will change the look and feel of the board.
Google bot is a web crawler it tells google whats out there, it helps with rankings and speeds up searches. Basically when you search on google it doesn’t look at the live web, it looks at what the bot has seen, in other words the cached copies of the web pages that the bot has taken.
Mark wants the bot to crawl as it help people searching for information on Spanish Property find this site the more it crawls the further up the google search this site becomes.
Offtrack a bit but has anyone noticed less traffic on spanish forums? We have people saying it’s negative but all the spanish forums are dead…what does this mean. Another forum I read has more posts discussing the UK than Spain 😕
The Private Sales forum is very telling. Most posts now achieve about one to two hundred hits with the only ones pulling any interest/response priced at under 100,000 euros. But if you look at around three years ago (page 10 for example), every post had one to two thousand hits. That equates to only about a tenth of people interested to look at properties for sale on this forum compared with three years ago. Or another way, a 90% drop.
I think there is a general fatigue-syndrome going on. Ones trying to hype up the market know they’re flogging a dead horse at the moment and it’s interesting that there are hardly any posts from people needing help/advice as in the past. The buying frenzy is over and the ‘caution’ word is out so there are natually less situations now where people are being caught out by the corruption. By now they’ve probably either capitulated and signed or are waiting for their court cases. Am sure many are just sitting on their hands, holding their breath and waiting to see how all this is going to pan out. And if Pablo is right we haven’t seen anything yet so there could be some interesting threads coming down the pipeline.
Mark – there is one glitch that I can see. When you click on a thread it always takes you to page 1 instead of taking you to the most recent page/post.
Also, it’s an (albeit small) annoyance having the poster’s name on the right. Most forum’s have it on the left (as with SPI before) where the eye is to start reading.
If you’re logged in you will see an icon at the top of the page called User Control Panel if you click on that you can reorder the way that you see post when viewing. The section you want is Board Preferences then edit Display Options then Display post order direction.
Paul, it’s so good to have a bit of a techie around. I would never have worked that out. Just tried it ….. changed my life.
So far the guy I hired to do this has updated the software to the latest version, which totally changed the design (which I was not expecting). I now waiting for him to do the rest of the work, like the new header design. Maybe he has gone on an Easter break.
Talking of Easter breaks, I’m leaving Spain, where the forecast is sunshine, and taking the family to the Yorkshire Dales, where the forecast is….I don’t even want to think about it.
Regards forum activity, well, the forums just reflect the reality of what’s going on the market. I’m not sure buyers are down 90%, but a lot for sure. That said, some agents are having the best year ever, selling what people still want at a price they like.
It won’t always be this bad, but I doubt that it will recover to what it was, least not in my lifetime.
I don’t know Mark, hired someone to do it for you…..it’s an easy upgrade. In saying that I had various tweaks in the previous version which prevented spam/robots etc and haven’t bothered this time.
Ver 2 to 3 is not that easy I found the database transfer to be a bit of a pain (php limits etc) on the ones I’ve done. Also ver 3 doesn’t have an effective human test when registering and once the spam bots find you it’s relentless until you mod the board.
Just returned from Spain to see this new site format.
Unfortunately it now looks like most other forums which I avoided in favour of this one which used to look different, felt different and had good usability. This is now a nightmare in its present form.
Sorry Mark IMHO nil point.

But it’s free so i guess we can’t complain.
Hi Paul, I guess if the servers you are working on are not updating their php version it will create you problems, at least that work is done by the hosting company. I stopped using a d/base for my property listings last year as i couldn’t be bothered with all the upgrades. I’d even hacked the code to work how i wanted it with 2 languages.
Previously I’d hacked phpbb to change the login page to another page, so bots didn’t find it. This time i couldn’t be bothered as there seems to be an update every week or so and I don’t have the time to make all the changes each time and/or check the amended pages. I’ve now just got details of the pages I’ve amended and change those when an upgrade is made.
Get rid of the blue-coloured typeface on the Board index (in fact everywhere), it should be black. It’s all incredibly tiring on the eyes when the background is blue.
Thread title on each post is far too large/dominating/unnecessary.
Poster details should be on the left as before, where the eye starts to read
Questions:
On the Forum Index, what do the red stars mean?
What is the significance of the scrolling-text in some of the circles?
I don’t know if I’m the only one, but the Board Index is brain/eye damage.
Have to agree with Charlie. Threads that have been recently responded to are not easy to see. It’s all too pale looking. When you log on to the forum, the SPANISH PROPERTY INSIGHT logo and title are gone. It looks an insignificant forum. If I am honest I cannot find a positive comment about the new upgrade. It’s very bland. Sorry Mark 🙁
Thanks for the feedback. The style will change. Bear with me. We’ll get there.
One thing though. I think the poster details on the right are better. It is repetitive info, so doesn’t need to be in poll position. And anyway, every post starts with ‘by whoever’ and the date, so the first thing you see after the title is who wrote the post, (if not how many posts they have written, when they joined, etc).
Anyone else have an opinion on this question of international importance?
And how horrified would you all be if I did something like this, where instead of a grey tree and mist there was a sunny Spanish beach (or something like that). Just an idea… http://demo.phpbb3styles.net/viewforum.php?style=615&f=2

I’d think you had really lost the plot Mark! 😆
How were the Yorkshire Dales Mark? You should have come over this week…lovely weather!
I’m sure you are aware that you can provide the user the option to pick their own preferred style via the User Control Panel, the bog standard one (quicksilver i think) is the only one loaded at the moment. All you do is download the styles http://www.phpbb.com/styles/db/index.php?i=browse&mode=group:phpbb&sub=3 and install them on the board.
everyone could then suit themselves without reference to you
I think Mark should have enrolled you Paul, to implement the new program. 🙂
Which version do you prefer Paul? Are Charlie & I the only ones who don’t like the new format? Usually, I would welcome changes if they are an improvement.
The thing is, the board Mark’s man has loaded is the standard “as it comes one,” you should also know that the software is first very good and secondly free! (forgive me if you know this) It’s open source which means as you’ve not paid for it there is no support apart from people who know about this programme and are willing to help for free. It’s a great concept and there is a huge amount of great software out there supplied the same way. As it’s open source if you write a style for it or any other addition it becomes part of the software and therefore belongs to everyone and no one i.e. you should not charge for it (many ask for a donation.)
So that means there are hundreds of free styles to choose from, I don’t know what Mark’s arrangement is with “his man” but he may allow you to request one or two styles and have them loaded. Obviously it would depend on how much work Mark’s man will do and the cost involved, as it will cost to alter each style to put the SPF logo on for example (some styles allow this without any effort, some will have to be hard coded.) I would limit it to six or so if I was Mark.
I don’t do this for a living (some that do shouldn’t 🙂 ) as always given time i will try to help if asked.
What is the significance of the scrolling-text in some of the circles?
I’m blowed if I can work it out – think it’s an age thing. 🙁
Thanks for your help Paul by the way on 31/3. Yes I did manage to work it out…eventually….but you failed to tell this total non-techie I also had to hit the ‘submit’ button when I finished so it took me a heck of a long time. 🙄
Geeez Charlie, even I knew that much!! 😆 Thanks Paul for your time on explaining things. I had a problem logging in on the changeover and so I emailed to where it said to email and had a reply from a foreign sounding name (since deleted) asking “what problem, what forum?” I replied saying not to worry, I had sorted the problem out myself. No worries…he said. So there is a man working on the mechanics of this website, but generically I guess. 😉
