Antares Barcelona’s eye-catching architecture is an art form in itself but within the high-end interiors you’ll find a dedication to contemporary art that’s unique among developers.
Barcelona is a city that revels in its creativity. From the works of world-famous artists, such as Miró, Casas and Picasso, to the fabulous architecture of Gaudi and Domenech i Montaner, the artwork on show in galleries and the public realm is both awe-inspiring and overwhelming. At Antares Barcelona, the city’s creative vibe is celebrated inside and out, via the stunning architecture and an interior homage to contemporary art.
A collection of exceptional sculpture, artefacts, paintings and installations are on view in both Antares Barcelona’s communal areas and the 26th-floor penthouse. The pieces have been specifically curated for the spaces by independent local art collector, Marcos Mora, and enhance what is already a show stopping backdrop. “Antares is an amazing development, a mix of incredible architecture, location, views, there’s nothing like it in Barcelona,” says Mora. “I believe spaces should have a sense of experience and story and the Antares penthouse is the most amazing space. I wanted to give people visiting it the experience of how you could live there, the sense of a home that complements the great terrace and views.”
Mora, who has an enviable life travelling global art fairs, says the secret to an outstanding art collection is to curate a look that’s “timeless and sexy”. That was his goal with Antares Barcelona. “I asked Antares to let me do something really thrilling. I didn’t want the penthouse display to look as if it has been put together artificially,” he explains. “You can tell when something is authentic.”
As well as working with established names, Mora specialises in identifying up-and-coming contemporary creators, particularly those with what he calls an “interesting evolution”. At Antares Barcelona, he has incorporated works by some of the most exciting and innovative international artists to create a breathtaking display. “I like to mix up interesting pieces with different textures, from different civilizations and periods, pieces from the past and contemporary works.”
Items on show are available for purchase and include works from artists with global recognition. Visitors can currently view Yaya Tur’s sensual sculpture ‘Femme’ in Antares Barcelona’s reception area, while his illuminating acrylics with gold leaf are on view in the penthouse. Also among the dazzling, gallery-level collection in the penthouse is the exciting vibrancy of Mexican artist, Fernanda Brunet’s painting ‘KZZZAAPPP’, along with the evocative ‘De los Espejos’ series by abstract artist Jose Maria Sicilia, whose art is also in New York’s MOMA and Guggenheim. The modernity of many of the artworks acts as a perfect counterpoint to traditional decorative pieces located in the penthouse, such as an antique Chinese wedding cabinet, an African dance headdress and a Roman relief dating to the first century AD.
Part of what gives art its authenticity, according to Mora, is the ability to develop patina. “Patina means the older a piece gets, the better it gets,” he says. “I seek out art that has character and symbolism and will develop a greater patina with time. That timeless patina and sensuality has to go together and in Antares it does.”
