Arcos de la Frontera and the Cadiz area…
Arcos is a gorgeous gem situated in a dramatic position astride a hilltop in the heartland of Real Spain. This historic town boasts every amenity: great bars and restaurants, contemporary art spaces, cultural activities, traditional ferias, country fairs, Easter and Christmas parades, yet it stands in the midst of a peaceful natural environment of rivers, lakes, citrus orchards, olive groves, horse ranches, vineyards, rich farmland and undulating hills, with a backdrop of majestic sierras.
The property and the location provide all the security and perks of town life with nature, fabulous walks and other outdoor activities right on your doorstep. There are several large and beautifully kept open-air swimming pools dotted around the town, where you can while away the whole day.
The cities of Jerez, Cadiz, Seville and Malaga, and also Gibraltar, are all within easy reach and you can be checking in at the airport or sunning yourself on the beach after only a 40 minute drive. Layout and accommodation in more detail…
The double-fronted entrance doors lead into a welcoming half-tiled hallway. Off the entrance hall to the left is a room currently used for dining, plenty big enough for a table for ten people, plus an annexe which is at present used as a double office with a landline telephone and internet point. The office is also plumbed to allow easy conversion to a bathroom, with the dining room adjacent potentially forming an additional en suite bedroom.
Off the hall to the right is the first reception room, where tucked away in a corner, is a quiet, compact water softening unit, a boon for prolonging the life of household appliances.
The entrance hall flows on into a typical Andalusian, cobbled, central patio with plenty of space for entertaining and outside dining. It has a covered well and is currently edged with refreshing green plants with a tap handy for watering them.
Off the patio is a large utility room with a butler’s sink for hand washing, storage shelves for cleaning materials or linen and more than adequate room for white goods. There is a washing machine, dish washer and chest freezer and also a water heater conveniently located here. Also off the patio is a guest cloakroom with a toilet and hand basin.
At the rear of the patio is the fully-fitted kitchen which is a cook’s dream. It has ample, hand-crafted storage units and spacious granite work surfaces. There is a Belling range cooker with two electric ovens and seven gas burners. There is also a larder fridge.
There are three rooms at the back of the house which are fully-restored caves at a constant temperature of 15C, ideal for food storage and preparation. They remain invitingly cool in the heat of summer, and pleasantly comfortable throughout the short winter. These rooms are as follows…
Adjoining the kitchen is a cosy breakfast room currently furnished with a small table and sofa but which would be large enough for a full size table and chairs. Off this is a barrel-ceilinged room converted for wine and food storage with plenty of shelving and a large wine rack. The original manger where animals fed, having been brought in to spend the night, has been retained as a classic feature.
Stairs with Andalusian patterned riser tiles and wrought-iron balustrades traditionally decorated with geranium pots lead to the first floor. On the left of the first floor landing is a generous reception room with two sets of French windows and typical Juliet balconies giving a splendid view of Arcos river, lake and the countryside beyond. An arched window looking out into the patio allows further light to come into the room. There are connections for television/home cinema, with satellite television.
Next door are two double bedrooms with a similar, fantastic view from the balconied French windows. The en suite bathroom has a large shower cubicle, bidet, toilet and hand basin and a large mirror.
Again Andalusian tiled stairs and balustrades lead to the second floor where there is an ‘Arcos arched’ corridor looking down into the patio. (Arcos arches are slim arches which are paired). The first right hand door off the corridor leads into a useful walk-in dressing room with shelving for storage of shoes or linen and plenty of space to hang clothes. Another water heater is housed high on the wall. The second door leads into a large bathroom which boasts a full-size bath, large shower cubicle, toilet, hand basin, bidet and large mirror.
The door at the end of the arched corridor leads into the upper sleeping area with two double bedrooms separated by a generous dressing room/sitting room. All three rooms have windows with spectacular views of the lake. One bedroom and the dressing room have further light provided by a window each into the patio.
Another short, colourful tiled flight of stairs leads up to the sunny roof terrace which has a superb, extensive panorama of the town, river, lake and countryside, with the backdrop of the Grazalema mountains in the distance (which offer many challenging walks!) You first step into a covered pavilion which remains cool even at mid-day in the height of the summer, so in addition to the patio there is a further space for al fresco eating or for taking a siesta on drowsy summer afternoons.
The roof terrace is arranged with large pots with a variety of Mediterranean herbs and splashes of colour from geraniums, hibiscus, nasturtiums, roses and several bougainvillea trained to grow along the specially made frame. There is a convenient tap installed for watering. At the back of the roof terrace is a storage room with plenty of shelving for household and garden items.
