Once you have found and hired an independent lawyer you need to establish a good working relationship built on trust and avoid giving any impression that you lack confidence in your lawyer. Having said that anything is possible so always keep copies of all the important documents you pass to your lawyer and keep notes of conversations and decisions. Many of the British people who bought on the Sea Golf Regency development in Alcaidesa through Ocean Estates ended up using Del Valle Abogados (DVA) – the lawyer recommended by Ocean Estates. DVA have since been raided by the police in a money-laundering investigation, and all or most of the company’s documents have been impounded, including client files. Those British clients who used DVA and didn’t keep copies of all the important documents now have no way of checking what they signed, and do not have access to any of the documents they handed over to DVA. Incidentally Fernando Del Valle, president of DVA and now detained on money-laundering charges, was also the administrator Alleerton – the promoter of the Sea Regency Golf development. This means that Ocean Estates were recommending their clients a firm of solicitors that had a clear interest in the successful sale of the development.
