Property in Spain
Buying a property in Spain can be a very enriching affair, both financially and in terms of enhancing your happiness and quality of life. That is why so many people dream of buying a property in Spain, either as a holiday home, or as a permanent or semi-permanent home for a new life in the sun. The quality of life that Spain tempts us with is irresistible, intoxicating, and casts a spell on us. Spain, with its stark beauty, contrasts, and passion, bewitches many a northern European.
So the dream of buying a property in Spain is strong, which might explain why so many people seem to rush into a purchase without taking the necessary precautions. Though the majority of buyers enjoy a trouble-free purchase, a significant minority come to rue the day they ever decided to buy a property in Spain. According to one survey I carried out, 30% of buyers of properties in Spain run into serious problems. And not all the problems stem from naivety on the part of buyers: some buyers have done everything buy the book, carrying out all the necessary searches, and still come a cropper.
The fact is that buying a property in Spain is riskier than many people realise; the conveyancing process is somewhat different to other countries, and many properties in Spain are afflicted by planning issues. Furthermore, for reasons I shan’t delve into here, many of the people working in the Spanish property business – property developers, real estate agents, and lawyers – can’t be trusted in a purchase that involves a large part of your life’s savings.
