BONMONT GOLF RESORT PROPERTY REVIEW, COSTA DORADA, CATALONIA, SPAIN
Please note that Bonmont is not included in my guide to quality new developments in Spain.
Bonmont Golf and Residential Property Resort
Bonmont is a golf resort and gated community in a rural setting on the shores of the Mediterranean. It is located in the Catalan province of Tarragona, about 90 minutes by car south of Barcelona. Access is restricted, and there is 24-hour security.
There are a wide variety of properties on offer at Bonmont, such as apartments and semi-detached houses with communal gardens and pools, and villas on independent plots with private gardens and pools.
The properties at Bonmont are built around an 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. (6,371 metres long, spread over 72 hectares, with a par of 72). Bonmont is a well maintained residential resort, and the roads are neatly lined with Cyprus trees and China Rose bushes.
Many of the owners of property in Bonmont live or work in the nearby cities of Tarragona and Barcelona, and the majority of owners are Spanish, many of them living at Bonmont year round. Proximity to cities like Barcelona and Tarragona means that property at Bonmont is not cheap.
A 5-star Sheraton Hotel, including a spa & beauty centre, is under construction at Bonmont, due to open in the spring of 2008. There is also a sports centre on site, with swimming pools, tennis courts, paddle-tennis courts, and football pitches. There is a gym and sauna complex in the clubhouse, and jogging and biking tracks around the perimeter of the resort.
Bonmont Golf Resort Area: Costa Dorada, Southern Catalonia, Spain
Bonmont is located 130 kilometres south of Barcelona, on the Costa Dorada (Golden Coast, also called Costa Daurada) of Southern Catalonia. Tarragona, declared a world heritage city by UNESCO on account of its extraordinary Roman ruins, is only half an hour by car. Barcelona and Tarragona are both easy drives, and offer everything you can possibly need in terms of shopping and services.
The nearest town to Bonmont is Miami Playa, a 5-minute drive away. Miami Playa is nothing much to look at, though it does have some nice beaches, and it can be useful for shopping. Bonmont's big weakness is that it aspires to be an upmarket resort, but all the nearby towns are rather downmarket.
On the other hand Bonmont is set in some of the most attractive countryside on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It is a fertile and verdant region, which partly explains why the province of Tarragona produces such good wines, such as the world-famous Penedes. The countryside is well tended, with a wide variety of trees and plants, including Pines, Palms, Eucalyptus, Cyprus, Orange, Olive, and Almond trees, not to mention aromatic bushes such as Rosemary and Lavender.
The defining feature of the landscape here is the dramatic, and beautiful contrast between the hills and the sea. At this point of the Costa Dorada the hills run down to the sea, so at Bonmont the views encompass the best of both.
There is no end of fun and interesting things to do in this region, whatever the season. For foodies there is so much in terms of local food and wine to enjoy, whilst out door types are spoilt for wild countryside to explore, including the beautiful valley and delta of the mighty Ebro River. For culture vultures the area is littered with historic sites, such as Roman ruins, medieval villages, and the Cistercian Monastery Route (another World Heritage Site). For beach lovers there are countless sandy beaches stretching for miles both north and south of Bonmont, and for families there is PortAventura – Spain’s premier family theme park.
Many people find the climate here more comfortable than further south. There is a short, mild winter here, and the change of seasons is notable. Many people take pleasure from living according to seasonal rhythms, and enjoying different types of food as the seasons change. The only real disadvantage in terms of the climate is a certain number of windy days each year, though these usually happen out of season.

Always use an independent lawyer when buying property in Spain. When buying off-plan or under construction, always insist on a bank guarantee to cover your stage payments. Make no payments without one.
