We’ve just had direct debits taken for water bills. One house has been empty, one we’ve been living in. Both were connected on the same day in late June. Bills sent quarterly. One bill for €112.93, one for €110.64. Went to the water authority offices to query as we thought they’d taken estimates and not actual meter readings.

Got a printout of our bills. We were amazed to see that despite being so careful with water consumption in the house we’re living in (I’ve been hand washing, not using the dishwasher etc.) the difference in cost between the 2 houses for water consumption is €2.29. The cost of water is €0.28 plus IVA per cubic meter. We’re in Cadiz province, near to Sotogrande.

The highest component of the bill is for sewage at €85.08. I find it staggering that the cost of water is so inexpensive (relatively) and you do not appear to be penalised the more you use. There may well be banding depending on the amounts used but am yet to find this out.

However, the costs are there as soon as you have a new property connected regardless of whether it is lived in. I guess this is a very easy way to collect revenue from all the holiday homes.

I just hope our community water is levied at the same rate for filling the pool and watering the communal gardens.

    Kind regards.

Yes, I’m sure there will. We’ve already experienced quite a lot with the developer, telephone service provider, Secretary-Administrator of our new Community as well as the Banks, purchasing faulty goods and trying to return them etc. etc.

As we always say, well at least the sun is shining.

Spain without sun, now there’s a thought to ponder.

Our Ayuntamiento has just sent all properties a letter advising that they will be changing the way drainage (alcantarillado) is going to be charged. Apparently it was based on the length of the road frontage of your house. Now they will be charging in direct relation to the quantity of water consumed (assuming you are connected to a metered mains water supply). Their assumption being, more water in = more sewage out!
