There has been lots of bad publicity re. Sean Connery being involved in corruption regarding the Malibu apartments. Much of the information coming from the Spanish Judge. Today the Judge denounced a letter from the British ambassador in Madrid. The Judge described the letter as being “intimidatory”! It was reported in the news yesterday that Connery has been cited to appear on 15th Oct.

The Ambassador points out that at the present moment no one either from the Judiciary or the spanish Police has communicated with Connery, either to inform him of the evidence against him or any court date etc. The Ambassador informs the Judge that as matters are Connery has a right in Law to take legal action against the Judge/court for giving out these inflammatory statements.

Whilst I agree with the Ambassador’s sentiments on the issue, shouldn’t this have been for Connery’s Lawyer to deal with! After all the British Government says it cannot intervene regarding British people like the Priors losing their homes, yet feels able to write on behalf of a celebrity whose official residence is Nassau, Bahamas…WTF 😮

Perhaps you could drop the Ambassador a line reminding him of his previous statements & the general line taken by the Foreign office in the recent pass.

Without knowing all the facts of this case, but making the assumption that he simply sold his home to a buyer, then what case does he have to answer??

He was free to sell his home to anyone he wished to for any price that they were willing to pay. Even if the buyer told him he would build illegal flats, thats the buyers concern.

Unless he had a commecial connection to the build of the illegal flats then I don’t see what the Spanish authorities can do.

JP1 fully agree with you and ignoring the sensationlism of the Spanish media. The issue here is the Ambassador getting involved, where as for others they & the FO have ignored the issues irrespective of the gravity.

Yes, I appreciate the point was about double standards. I was just high-lighting the fact that as a seller he can’t be held liable for the buyers subsequent actions

I wonder what the British Ambassador would reply to an ordinary person who wrote to say they had been accused of something they hadn’t done……”Get a Lawyer” 💡

Further to this sean Connery has since sent a Fax to the Judge. The Judge then promptly gave out copies to the media which seems unfair. Surely bad practice for a Judge to do this and may be against European law? Here is the first page, second page is hard to read due to bad copy.

“Please be advised that due to health reasons I am away from my permanent place of residence, accompanied by my Wife. Hence I am writing this letter from my current wherabouts from a fax No. not my own.

The household employee at my place of residence in Bahamas has informed me that some documents sent by mail from Spain have arrived there.

Over the past few days the Press and the mass media have been disseminating information, particularly over the internet, and assuming this is true, maintaining that I have allegedly summoned to declare at this court on 15/10. These refer to a letter that seemingly has been sent to you by my countries Ambassador, such letters even being published in these types of media.

With all due respect to your authority, I hereby request that I be personally notified at my place of residence known to the court and in accordance with the procedure provided for under Spanish law and in international treaties to which Spain is part, specifying the charges made against me, if any, and the evidence on which they are based. Something I believe I am entitled to.

    I hereby state
-I have not received any official communication through the pertinant legal channels that would permit a Spanish Judge to extend his Powers outside the territory of his jurisdiction. No official communication through the competant authorities has been notified to me.
-That I have no objection to declare in the proceedings said to be underway if they effectively do exist, provided that the same have been duly observed, and once I have gained knowledge of what, in accordance with the Law, I should know in respect to facts or evidentry elements or specific charges, all sufficiently in advance of my declaration.

There are several things that strike me as strange about this whole episode.

    – Connery is reported to be worth some £170. The amount of money involved here, it was a $9 million property so we’re probably talking about 2-3 million UDS, whilst a huge sum to the vast majority of people is not that great, in the overall scheme of things, to him. Any serious damage to his image would cost him far more than that. Something he will most certainly be aware of.

    – Someone in his position would have lawyers, image consultants, PR advisors, etc on retainers. This story has been bouncing around for ages. Is it credible that he has heard nothing until recently?

    – Is this fax really from him? Surely he’d get a lawyer to deal with the court?

I just don’t know how much of this story has been got up by the press. Certainly I’m very sceptical about it.

The Fax was released by the Judge. The photo-copy is signed by both himself and his wife. The fax came from Chicago. Apparently the Judge believes it to be genuine.

Seems as though the Judge has a grudge against Connery, he has another 98 people to deal with in this case, two others who are no shows and have a warrant out for their arrest. They have not been referred to by this Judge!

I don’t want to muddy the waters further, but I read that the investigating authorities seized a number of documents from Connery’s lawyer in Madrid which seem to imply that he was more involved than just the innocent seller of a property.

Connery also seems to rely on his Bahamas address taking him out of Spanish jurisdiction, which wouldn’t be the case if he was residing in his native Scotland.

It does seem strange that the UK government got involved in the first place.
