We are hopefully buying a property in the Iznajar area, can anyone confirm or advise where I can find out which Police Station we have to go to obtain a NIE, there is a small Police Station in the village, but do we have to go to one in Cordoba ?

      Many thanks

I would advise you to get your lawyer to get someone to accompany you to get your NIE. It will cut down the time and stress of the system and it should be part of the service the lawyer offers for their 1% fee.

You may find some useful info on NIEs here:

Hi, in the normal course of events it should be a national police station which in turn deals with foreigners. According to the relevant Government Ministry website information you should contact the following for Cordoba:

      OFICINA DE EXTRANJEROS

      Pza. Constitucion Nº 1
      14004 Cordoba
      Tfno: 957 989 217

I would suggest that you call before 1pm. Best of luck.

I would suggest visiting any national police station before 8am if you want to get anything useful done.

Thanks for all your replies. I have read the article as suggested by Mark but one final question if I may, as Malaga is nearer to Iznajar than Cordoba are you permitted to go to another province to obtain the NIE ?

You can apply for your NIE at any national police station, most of them operate a ticket system similar to the meat counters in the supermarkets, a tip take your initial ticket and after about 30 mins take another and keep safe incase you need to alter/copy something etc. In my experience they are not tolerant of mistakes and will normally just send you away if anything is done wrong, normally by this time the days ticket alocation is gone and you would need to come back again the next day.

In some places, for instance Asturias, you have to pay a tax of 5.48 Euros to get an NIE (you get a pre-filled from the police station, which you use to pay the tax at a bank, and then return it to the police station so that you can collect you NIE). I’m trying to find out if you have to pay this tax to get an NIE number in any other parts of Spain. Anyone heard of this going on elsewhere? I find it strange that they only charge this tax in Asturias…

      Hi Mark,

None of my clients have had to pay a tax in either Elche (Blanca South) or Cartagena (Costa Calida).

Got to agree with Jiminspain and get there early. Once that days ticket allocation has gone thats it. In Elche sometimes the queue has begun at 7am to get one of the 50 daily tickets. If there is a mistake on the form they will send you away. One client hadnt got 2 copies of his purchase contract, and despite the clerk sitting 20 feet from a copier, they sent him away to get another photocopy. When he came back they just told him to come back next day.

      Hi Jiminspain,

On part 3 of the form it asks why you want an NIE and what for. So we have always advised clients to take copies of the purchase contract to justify this. The offices in Elche and Cartagena have always kept the copies.

Because this is fairly common. Many Police Stations require this as prove; the private contract (exchanges). Nothing dodgy.

Hi Mark, Asturias is even stranger than you think! If you live in Gijon, you can you to the police station with a foreigners office, but if like us, you live near to Oviedo you have to goto the Office for foreigners in the government buildings and get your NIE there.

If you want a card, you have to pay another tax as well when you goto the police station to get your fingerprints done (they fingerprint you, make you go to the bank to pay the tax then come back to collect slip to allow you to return for your card in 25 days..). Sorry but I can’t remember how much this was but I think it was more than 5 euros!!

We just like to be different…Asturias does have a long history of that at least!!

Yep, seems we ARE different, no tax either in Cantabria last time I assisted some clients there (I didn’t ask of course, they simply gave us the number with no payment so I made to further question)

Heather, the procedure you are describing it’s correct to get the residence card and it’s quite the same we Spaniards follow to get our DNI (fingerprints included) we do also pay the same tax and you are allowed to do it in most of main Asturian town’s Police Stations, But getting only the NIE number for non residents can only be done in Oviedo’s foreigners office (Plaza de España 5, 2nd floor from 9:00 to 11:00) They now charge you this 5.48 Euro tax but in the other hand the service has improved a lot, as you have now a new UE-citizens-only office and you get your number certificate in less than 10 minutes
