We are about to complete on a purchase in Spain (well by end of Mar 2006) and we need to obtain an NIE number. Does anyone have experience and the steps required to obtain this from the UK alone, without a visit to Spain?

This is excellent information and thank you.

If the completion date is due end of March, when would you suggest is best to attempt to gain an NIE? Basically what is a good ‘general’ length of term from application to receipt of NIE number.

      regards

      Darren

When applying from abroad I think you should figure on about 6 weeks until you receive the NIE, though it may take longer, or may not arrive at all (post can be a bit unreliable).

Please note that I’m about to update the instructions, so perhaps wait until tomorrow before downloading the instructions form.

The main change I’m going to make is to point out that you can have the NIE or other notifications sent to an address in the UK, if you so wish. However you have to PRINT THE UK ADDRESS VERY CAREFULLY on the form. The Spanish ladies in the Madrid office who deal with applications from abroad have complained to me that they often have trouble reading / understanding foreign addresses.

Last month I used the Spanish Consulate in Manchester to apply for a NIE number. The staff were friendly and very helpful,I recieved the number in less than a month.

This is my 1st posting on this Forum and would like to take this opportunity to say how useful it has been to me over the last few months.

      Thanks again.

it was all in the fee – and he set up gas/electricity/water/community/etc direct debit.

But having said that I didnt buy off-plan so we had an address/supply already.

We recently obtained our Nie’s without leaving our home town.
We used a Spanish solicitor in London who prepared the POA giving our solicitor in Spain the powers.
This was then posted to our home address with contact details of our local notaries.
The document was notarised locally and then returned to the solicitors in London.
They obtained the Apostille from the Foreign Office and they then forwarded it to our solicitor in Spain.
The whole process of obtaining the NIE’S took only three weeks.
It costed us £260 but that was far cheaper than flying to Spain.
