Car Hire in Spain

I’m going to Cambrils on holiday this year and my wife and I wish to get down to Vinaros, perhaps only for a day, to see that area and the only way that we can see that gives us the option to spend time down there appears to be to hire a car. (We’ve tried the train but there is a limited “window” using RENFE to and from Vinaros).

Looking into this more I’ve found some people have had problems generally in Spain hiring cars, in particular the rule about returning a car with the tank full.
I’ve read of people finding a large deduction on their credit cards after returning to the UK for this reason and for other seemingly ridiculous reasons and this worries me because I’ve already had a bank account cleaned out this year through a scam so I don’t want to find that somebody has slapped a huge amount on my credit card, in Spain, when I’m back home.
I’ve also read of other scams that seem to be on the increase in Spain where your details are passed on to someone by some nefarious individual within the rental firm and, lo and behold, you get followed and mugged.
Any advice would be helpful please, especially the actual Driving License required as there seems to some confusion over this too where the photo-type license isn’t recognised in some places in Spain but is in others!
      Thanks,

i don’t think the full tank situation arises if you only hire for less than three days. i have hired several times with no problems. just remember itt must be a credit card as a debit card will not be accepted.
